Poverty grew in almost half of Pennsylvania counties despite strong national economy

Despite an economic recovery that lifted people out of poverty in most areas of the country, poverty increased in at least one county in every state between 2016 and 2018. The poverty rate in Pennsylvania in 2016 was 12.9%, dropping slightly to 12.2% in 2018, according to the census estimates. Statewide, 30 of 67 counties, 45%, had a higher poverty rate in 2018 than in 2016.
