(Summerdale, Pennsylvania - October 12, 2009) - William P. Del Collo, Jr., principal of Fort Washington Elementary School, a suburban K-5 school with approximately 500 students in the Upper Dublin School District, was selected as Pennsylvania's 2009 elementary school National Distinguished Principal. The 2009 celebration marks the 26th year that the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the U.S. Department of Education have presented this prestigious award.

"Mr. Del Collo was nominated and selected by his fellow principals through a statewide search process conducted by the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association)," said Dr. Barbara Rudiak, chair of PA Principals Association's NDP Selection Committee. For the first time, two principals were selected as NDPs from Pennsylvania - one from an elementary school and the other from a middle school. Jonathan Ross, a principal at Drexel Hill Middle School in the Upper Darby School District, was chosen as the NDP from a middle school. Both principals will represent our state in the National Distinguished Principal program Oct. 22-23, 2009 in Washington, D.C. One or more principals are chosen annually from the 50 states and the District of Columbia as the National Distinguished Principal.

A graduate of Millersville and Widener universities, Mr. Del Collo previously held the position of assistant principal at Barkley and Schuylkill elementary schools in the Phoenixville Area School District. He has served as principal of Fort Washington Elementary School since 2000, and has been an administrator for 10 years. This past year, Fort Washington Elementary School posted the fifth highest PSSA scores of all elementary schools across the state.

Criteria for selection of the principals, set by NAESP and the U.S. Department of Education, require that the honorees are active principals of schools where programs are designed to meet the academic and social needs of all students and where there are firmly established community ties with parents and local business organizations.

Mr. Del Collo is a member of both the Pennsylvania and national Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, served as the historian for the Kappa Delta Pi Executive Council and was a co-presenter at the 2008 PA Principals Association conference.

He has presented at the Pennsylvania Education Excellence Fair and had seven school initiatives honored between 2002 and 2007. He also received the Educator 500 Award from the 3e Institute for Educational Excellence and Entrepreneurship in 2004, 2005 and 2007 and his school was the recipient of a PSSA Title 1 Academic Grant for PSSA Improvement in 2004.

PA Principals Association serves as Pennsylvania's professional educational association and represents approximately 4,000 elementary, middle level and secondary principals throughout the Commonwealth. (Harrisburg, PA) — Senator Jane Clare Orie (R-40), Majority Whip for the Republican Caucus of the Pennsylvania Senate, has been selected to receive the prestigious Educational Excellence Award for 2009 from the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association). The award is given to a person who has been a "friend of public education" and who has made significant contributions to the attainment of educational excellence in the Commonwealth's elementary and secondary schools. Sen. Orie will be presented with the award during the annual banquet held in conjunction with PA Principals Association's 17th Annual State Conference on Sunday, Oct. 4, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in State College, Pa.

 

During the past year, Sen. Orie was an outspoken critic of the Governor's Keystone Exams (formerly Graduate Competency Assessments). She is the prime sponsor of Senate Bill 281, which would require legislative approval of all new graduation requirements. It is currently in the House Appropriations Committee for consideration.

"It truly is a great honor to receive this award," Sen. Orie said. "It was originally presented to a man I greatly admired, the late Senator Jim Rhoades, former Chair of the Education Committee.  Jim was the lead critic of this testing scheme before he passed away.  He knew it was "just another fad...that won't help a single student anywhere.'  If we are truly to help students succeed, the supports must be in place from the early years on -- otherwise children are going to fall through the cracks.  I would like to thank the Association for standing with me on this issue."

Sen. Orie, who is serving her second term representing the citizens of the 40th Senatorial District in Pennsylvania, was first elected in March 2001 to the State Senate to fill a vacancy. She won re-election in 2002 and in 2006. She currently represents portions of northern Allegheny County and southern and central Butler County. She is currently one of the 10 women serving in the Pennsylvania Senate. She is a member of the following Senate Committees: Aging and Youth; Community, Economic and Recreational Development; Finance; Judiciary; and Rules and Executive Nominations on which she serves as vice chair.

For the 2007-2008 and 2009-2010 legislative sessions, Sen. Orie was selected to serve as Majority Whip for the Republican Caucus. Prior to taking her seat in Senate, she spent 4 1/2 years in the State House of Representatives. She is a veteran 10-year prosecutor who served as state Deputy Attorney General in the Division of Prosecution and as Assistant District Attorney for Allegheny County where she was elevated, due to her high conviction rate, to the divisions of Homicide and Crimes Against Persons. Sen. Orie holds a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College and a law degree from Duquesne University.

She is a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Allegheny County Bar Associations; the Pennsylvania District Attorney's Association; and she serves on the many boards of directors, some include Three Rivers Wet Weather Demonstrations Program, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Passavant Foundation, the Soldiers of Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum Trust and the Center for Victims of Violent Crime.

She also serves on a number of boards of trustees/fellows, some of which include the Police Offer Support Team, the University of Pittsburgh's Institute of Politics, St. Barnabas Charitable Foundation. She is the chairperson for the Northern Area STOP Task Force and the chairperson of the Government Subcommittee for the Allegheny County Violence Task Force. In addition, she is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Government Lawyers Committee and serves on the board for the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh.

(Harrisburg, Pa.) — David G. Bieri, principal of Robert Morris Elementary School in the Scranton School District, Scranton, Pa., recently assumed the presidency of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association).

PA Principals Association's membership of approximately 4,000 is comprised of elementary, middle level and secondary school principals, assistant principals and supervisors and is affiliated with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Mr. Bieri took over the association reins from 2007-08 president Michael E. Allison of Hopewell High School following the annual business meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008 during the 16th annual PA Principals Association conference in Pittsburgh (Oct. 19-21, 2008).

Most recently, he served the association as the 2007-08 president-elect. He began his career as a special education teacher at Stroudsburg High School before serving for 12 years as assistant principal at Dallas, Crestwood and Pittston high schools.

Mr. Bieri joined the PA Principals Association 14 years ago. Before becoming president-elect, Mr. Bieri was PA Principals Association secretary and a member of the organization's Assistant Principals' Conference Committee (1995-96), the PA Principals Association Conference Committee (2002-03) and Assistant Principal At-Large for the Pennsylvania Association of Secondary School Principals' Executive Committee (2001-03).

In addition to PA Principals Association activities, Mr. Bieri has participated in the Pennsylvania Inspired Leadership Initiative, the Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit 19 Continuing Professional Education Committee and the Truancy Reduction Initiative for the Adjudicated & Non-Adjudicated Youth.

He has also served as an executive board member of the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils and as chair of the UNICO High School Soccer Cup.

Mr. Bieri earned a bachelor's of science degree in special education from East Stroudsburg University. He also received his master's of education in school administration from East Stroudsburg.

(Harrisburg, Pa.) — Michael E. Allison, principal of Hopewell High School in Aliquippa, Pa., was honored as the outgoing president of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals at the association's 16th annual state conference in Pittsburgh. Mr. Allison was presented with a plaque and ring for his exemplary service to the organization in 2007-08 during the annual banquet held at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008.

Mr. Allison turned the president's gavel over to David G. Bieri, PA Principals Association's 2008-09 president, at the association's annual business meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008. Mr. Bieri is principal of Robert Morris Elementary School in the Scranton School District, Scranton, Pa.

Previously, Mr. Allison served as an adjunct faculty member at Franciscan University in the graduate studies program. He also worked as assistant principal at Hopewell High School and as a teacher and coach at South Side Middle School.

Mr. Allison joined the PA Principals Association and National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) nine years ago. He served as the West II secondary regional representative to the PA Principals Association board of directors for three years. As a PA Principals Association regional representative, he organized principal meetings for the west regions.

In 2005, Mr. Allison received the PA Principals Association/Lincoln Investment Planning Community service award. In February 2006, he authored an article for the Pennsylvania Administrator magazine.

In addition to PA Principals Association activities, Mr. Allison participated as a past president and member of the Midwestern Athletic Conference (MAC) Principals' Association. He served on the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League softball committee and presented at various conferences and colleges.

Mr. Allison earned a bachelor's of science degree from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, a master's of education degree from Franciscan University of Steubenville and an elementary principal certification from Westminster College/Youngstown State University. He participated in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program for Educational Leaders at Duquesne University.

(Harrisburg, PA) — Dr. Joseph S. Yarworth, assistant professor of education at Albright College, has been selected to receive the prestigious Educational Excellence Award for 2008 from the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association). Dr. Yarworth will be presented with the award during the annual banquet held in conjunction with the PA Principals Association's 16th Annual State Conference on Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel in Pittsburgh.

The award is given to a person who has been a "friend of public education," and who has made significant contributions to the attainment of educational excellence in the Commonwealth's elementary and secondary schools.

Dr. Yarworth's distinguished 35-year career in education has included time as a language teacher, guidance counselor, school superintendent and college professor. He presented at several PA Principals Association Principals' Leadership Academies and various workshops on testing and job satisfaction for the association. He also facilitated PA Principals Association's No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Task Force and produced the position paper, "No Child Left Behind Reauthorization." He is currently facilitating the association's High Stakes Testing Task Force and developing a white paper, which will be published in the fall. He has written more than a dozen journal articles in publications such as the Journal of Educational Psychology, and has taught seminars on testing and assessment for the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.

"I am deeply honored by the association's recognition," Dr. Yarworth said. "I consider the principalship to be the most important position in school management. Principals organize and manage their schools. With the faculty they provide the leadership needed to enact the academic standards and create an atmosphere that defines achievement for the students. Without their leadership, it is not possible to have a successful school. It has been my pleasure to work with PA Principals Association as a superintendent, a professor and a facilitator over many years." 

He was featured in the October 2008 edition of the American Association of School Administrator's publication, The School Administrator, for his role in fighting censorship and protecting the rights of teachers and principals to select and recommend texts for use in public schools.

After serving as superintendent for 15 years at Muhlenberg and Schuylkill Valley school districts, Dr. Yarworth landed a position as assistant professor of education at Albright College. He also taught graduate courses in curriculum, assessment and administration for Bucknell University, Lehigh University and Wilkes University.

He served in Vietnam as a military training adviser from 1970-1971.

(Harrisburg, PA)—More than 400 elementary, middle level and secondary school principals, assistant principals, supervisors and other education leaders will convene in Pittsburgh for the 16th annual conference of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association) to be held October 19-21, 2008 at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel.

"This conference is dedicated to assist principals, assistant principals and other educational leaders with the many initiatives such as AYP, IDEIA, Act 1, NCLB and others they ecounter on a daily basis," explained Marshall J. Wagner, the 2008 conference chairperson and a retired principal from the Hollidaysburg Area School District.

Dr. Joseph S. Yarworth, assistant professor of education at Albright College, has been selected to receive the PA Principals Association's prestigious Educational Excellence Award for 2008. The honor is given annually to a citizen of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who has made significant contributions to the attainment of education excellence in the state's elementary and secondary schools. Dr. Yarworth facilitated several PA Principals Association task forces. He also presented at several PA Principals Association Leadership Academies and various workshops on testing and job satisfaction for the association.The award will be presented to Dr. Yarworth during PA Principals Association's annual banquet (6:15 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008).

In addition to the more than 75 vendors exhibiting their wares for schools and classrooms, a multitude of professional and informational breakout sessions and keynote addresses will be presented to attendees during the three-day conference. Dr. Todd Whitaker, a best-selling author and professor at Indiana State University, will present, "What Great Principals Do Differently" during the First General Session from 1-2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19.

Bill Bond is the specialist for school safety at the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). He will present "You Can't Have Student Achievement Unless Your School is Safe, Supportive & Effective" at the Second General Session from 8:30-10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 20.

Also presenting on Monday is Carl Glickman, a Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Georgia who has written 13 books on school leadership, educational renewal and the moral imperative of education. His presentation, "Leadership for Powerful and Purposeful Schools," will be given at the Third General Session from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20.

As the final general session speaker on Tuesday, Oct. 21, Jay McTighe - known for his work with coordinating statewide efforts to develop instructional strategies, curriculum models and assessment procedures for improving the quality of student thinking - will present "Differentiated Instruction to Improve Student Achievement" at the Fourth General Session from 9:45-11:00 a.m. concluding the conference.

Other distinguished speakers and guests include Dr. Gerald Zahorchak, secretary of education for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Dr. Nancy M. Davenport, president of the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and Steve S. Pophal, president-elect of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

(Harrisburg, Pa.)—Joseph J. Foriska, retired principal of Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School in the Pittsburgh School District, has recently been hired as Western Region Office Manager of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association), headquartered in Summerdale, Pa.

PA Principals Association's membership of approximately 4,000, is comprised of elementary, middle level and secondary school principals, assistant principals and supervisors and is affiliated with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

 

Foriska took over the association's Western Region Office Manager duties after being approved by the PA Principals Association's board of directors at its annual retreat on Monday, July 14, 2008 in State College.

Foriska replaces Vince Carr, who held the Western Office Manger position for 11 years.

Foriska has served as principal at five schools for the previous 18 years. He retired from Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School in June. In his new position, Foriska will act as a liaison between administrator in western Pennsylvania and PA Principals Association's Harrisburg office. One of his primary duties will be advising members on issues related to employment rights and/or Act 93 activities.

"All of us know Joe's integrity and passion for PA Principals Association," said Michael Allison, PA Principals Association president. "He will be a welcomed addition to the organization's staff."

Among his many posts as a 16-year member of the PA Principals Association, Foriska has served as the association's president and as president of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary School Principals.

Foriska will receive PA Principals Association's 2008 Joseph Mamana Award for Meritorious Service at the state conference, which is Oct. 19-21 at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel in Pittsburgh. The award is given to a member in good standing who has performed meritorious service to the association and has made significant contributions to the professional advancement of principals.

"It is my honor and privilege to continue the high standard of service that Mr. Carr brought on behalf of the PA Principals Association as our first Western Office Manager," Foriska said.

Foriska earned a bachelor's degree in education from Edinboro University and a master's in education from California University of Pennsylvania.

Reston, VA—Christopher Dormer, assistant principal at Upper Darby High School in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, has been named the Pennsylvania State Assistant Principal of the Year.

The NASSP State and National Assistant Principal of the Year Program annually honors a single winner from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) schools. From that pool of outstanding administrators, one national winner is chosen. The state and national winners will be honored at a black-tie event in Washington, DC, in the spring of 2008, for their efforts to make their schools a shining star in their community. (Harrisburg, PA)—Dr. Linda W. Marcincin, principal of Slatington Elementary School in Slatington, Pa., has recently been appointed as Secretary of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association), headquartered in Summerdale, Pa.

PA Principals Association's membership of approximately 4,000, is comprised of elementary, middle level and secondary school principals, assistant principals and supervisors and is affiliated with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

 

Dr. Marcincin took over the association's secretarial reins following the annual business meeting on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 held in conjunction with the fifteenth annual PA Principals Association conference in Camp Hill, Pa. (October 21-23, 2007).

Dr. Marcincin previously served as an assistant principal at Northern Lehigh High for two years, and as an assistant principal at Northern Lehigh Middle School for eight years.

She has been a member of PA Principals Association for 13 years. She most recently served as the East II regional elementary representative to the PA Principals Association board of directors. As a PA Principals Association regional representative, she organized principal meetings for the eastern regions. She has also served as a member of the PA Principals Association conference committee, which she has attended regularly for the past five years.

Dr. Marcincin has been a participant in the "Previewing the Principalship" workshop discussion panel for two years, and a participant in the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators' workshop discussion panel for one year. She has had an article published in the NAESP's Principal magazine. She is currently working on certification as a national principal mentor.

Dr. Marcincin earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from Moravian College, and a master's of arts degree in English from New York University. She received a certification as a reading specialist from Kutztown University, and holds a principal certification and superintendent's letter of eligibility from Lehigh University. She received her doctorate from Nova Southeastern University.

(Harrisburg, PA)—Michael E. Allison, principal of Hopewell High School in Aliquippa, Pa., has recently assumed the Presidency of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association), headquartered in Summerdale, Pa.

PA Principals Association's membership of approximately 4,000, is comprised of elementary, middle level and secondary school principals, assistant principals and supervisors and is affiliated with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

 

Mr. Allison took over the association reins following the annual business meeting on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 held in conjunction with the fifteenth annual PA Principals Association conference in Camp Hill, Pa. (October 21-23, 2007).

Most recently, he served the association as the 2006-07 president-elect. He has worked as an adjunct faculty member at Franciscan University in the graduate studies program. Previously, he served as an assistant principal at Hopewell High School for two years after teaching and coaching at South Side Middle School for 10 years.

Mr. Allison has been a member of PA Principals Association and NASSP for eight years. He served as the West II secondary regional representative to the PA Principals Association board of directors for three years. As a PA Principals Association regional representative, he has organized principal meetings for the west regions. He currently serves on the PA Principals Association conference committee.

In 2005, Mr. Allison was a PA Principals Association/Lincoln Investment Planning Community service award recipient. In February 2006, he authored an article for publication in the Pennsylvania Administrator magazine.

In addition to PA Principals Association activities, Mr. Allison is a past president and member of the Midwestern Athletic Conference (MAC) Principal's Association. He has served on the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League softball committee and has presented at various conferences and colleges.

Mr. Allison earned a bachelor of science degree from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, a master's of education degree from Franciscan University of Steubenville and an elementary principal certification from Westminster College/Youngstown State University. He participated in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program for Educational Leaders at Duquesne University.
