Lawmakers frustrated that young people know the 'American Idol' judges better than they know Supreme Court justices want schools to begin giving all students the citizenship test given to new Americans. The bill in its initial form would have required that students pass the test to graduate.

The state Department of Education has provided more than $200,000 in grants for the training and compensation of school resource and school police officers to five school districts in the region: Quaker Valley, Penn Hills and Plum Borough in Allegheny County and Central Valley and Ambridge Area in Beaver County.

This move buys teachers extra instructional time to ready students for the exams, which are used in teacher evaluations as well as to meet the federal accountability requirements. So instead of the testing period starting April 9 as is the case in 2018, they will begin as late as April 25 in future years.

S-CCATE (The School- Compassionate Culture Analytic Tool for Educators) is appropriate for K-8 schools and the validation study will be conducted with schools that offer services to at least one of these grades. The S-CCATE is based on a scientific review of the research and input from teams of principals and teacher leaders over a 7-year time period. It should take teachers 12- 15 minutes to complete.  Click here to begin the survey Principals, please forward to your teachers to respond.

S-CCATE is completed online in google docs.  Participation is voluntary and schools/teachers may discontinue participation at any time. All data will be coded, teacher confidentiality is assured, and reports will be in the aggregate.
