Reston, VA—Christopher Dormer, assistant principal at Upper Darby High School in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, has been named the Pennsylvania State Assistant Principal of the Year.

The NASSP State and National Assistant Principal of the Year Program annually honors a single winner from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) schools. From that pool of outstanding administrators, one national winner is chosen. The state and national winners will be honored at a black-tie event in Washington, DC, in the spring of 2008, for their efforts to make their schools a shining star in their community. During their stay in Washington, the honorees will participate in professional development and networking activities with their peers. VIRCO Inc. (Harrisburg, PA)—Dr. Linda W. Marcincin, principal of Slatington Elementary School in Slatington, Pa., has recently been appointed as Secretary of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association), headquartered in Summerdale, Pa.

PA Principals Association's membership of approximately 4,000, is comprised of elementary, middle level and secondary school principals, assistant principals and supervisors and is affiliated with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

 

Dr. Marcincin took over the association's secretarial reins following the annual business meeting on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 held in conjunction with the fifteenth annual PA Principals Association conference in Camp Hill, Pa. (October 21-23, 2007).

Dr. Marcincin previously served as an assistant principal at Northern Lehigh High for two years, and as an assistant principal at Northern Lehigh Middle School for eight years.

She has been a member of PA Principals Association for 13 years. She most recently served as the East II regional elementary representative to the PA Principals Association board of directors. As a PA Principals Association regional representative, she organized principal meetings for the eastern regions. She has also served as a member of the PA Principals Association conference committee, which she has attended regularly for the past five years.

Dr. Marcincin has been a participant in the "Previewing the Principalship" workshop discussion panel for two years, and a participant in the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators' workshop discussion panel for one year. She has had an article published in the NAESP's Principal magazine. She is currently working on certification as a national principal mentor.

Dr. Marcincin earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from Moravian College, and a master's of arts degree in English from New York University. She received a certification as a reading specialist from Kutztown University, and holds a principal certification and superintendent's letter of eligibility from Lehigh University. She received her doctorate from Nova Southeastern University.

(Harrisburg, PA)—Michael E. Allison, principal of Hopewell High School in Aliquippa, Pa., has recently assumed the Presidency of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association), headquartered in Summerdale, Pa.

Mr. Allison took over the association reins following the annual business meeting on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 held in conjunction with the fifteenth annual PA Principals Association conference in Camp Hill, Pa. (October 21-23, 2007).

Most recently, he served the association as the 2006-07 president-elect. He has worked as an adjunct faculty member at Franciscan University in the graduate studies program. Previously, he served as an assistant principal at Hopewell High School for two years after teaching and coaching at South Side Middle School for 10 years.

Mr. Allison has been a member of PA Principals Association and NASSP for eight years. He served as the West II secondary regional representative to the PA Principals Association board of directors for three years. As a PA Principals Association regional representative, he has organized principal meetings for the west regions. He currently serves on the PA Principals Association conference committee.

In 2005, Mr. Allison was a PA Principals Association/Lincoln Investment Planning Community service award recipient. In February 2006, he authored an article for publication in the Pennsylvania Administrator magazine.

In addition to PA Principals Association activities, Mr. Allison is a past president and member of the Midwestern Athletic Conference (MAC) Principal's Association. He has served on the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League softball committee and has presented at various conferences and colleges.

Mr. Allison earned a bachelor of science degree from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, a master's of education degree from Franciscan University of Steubenville and an elementary principal certification from Westminster College/Youngstown State University. He participated in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program for Educational Leaders at Duquesne University.

(Harrisburg, PA)—Dr. Barbara A. Rudiak, immediate past president of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association) and the executive director, school management, K-5 elementary schools for the Pittsburgh School District, was honored as the outgoing president by her peers and invited guests at the fifteenth annual PA Principals Association State Conference in Camp Hill, Pa. Dr. Rudiak was presented with a plaque and a ring for her exemplary service to the association in 2006-2007 during the annual banquet held at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel on Sunday, October 21, 2007.

Dr. Rudiak turned the president's gavel over to Michael E. Allison, PA Principals Association's 2007-2008 president, at the association's annual business meeting on Tuesday, October 23, 2007. Mr. Allison is the principal of Hopewell Senior High School in Aliquippa, Pa.

Previously, she served as principal of Phillips Elementary School in the Pittsburgh School District for 13 years. She began her career in education as a middle school teacher for 14 years. She also served as a supervisor of a school improvement program for two years and an assistant principal for two years.

A member of PA Principals Association and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) for 13 years, Dr. Rudiak served as the West IV elementary regional representative to the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary School Principals (PAESP) board of directors and the PA Principals Association board of directors for five years. She served as a member of the PA Principals Association Conference Committee in 2001 and 2006; and as the PA Principals Association federal relations coordinator for two years. She attended the National Principals' Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., in 2001. In addition, she has attended seven PA Principals Association state conferences; the NAESP/National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) National Leaders' Conference in Washington, D.C., for three years; and the Northeast Regional Elementary Principals' Conference for two years.

Dr. Rudiak was the recipient of Pennsylvania's National Distinguished Principal (NDP) Award in 2003.

She is involved in various Pittsburgh School District committees, and has served on the executive board for the Pittsburgh Administrators' Association for 15 years.

Dr. Rudiak earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Pittsburgh, a master's of education degree from Duquesne University and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.

(Harrisburg, PA)—Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) has been selected to receive the prestigious Educational Excellence Award for 2007 from the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association). Senator Specter will be presented with the award during the annual banquet held in conjunction with the PA Principals Association's Fifthteenth Annual State Conference, Sunday, October 21, 2007, at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel & Convention Center, Harrisburg, Pa.

 

The award is given to a person who has been a "friend of public education" and who has made significant contributions to the attainment of educational excellence in the Commonwealth's elementary and secondary schools.

Senator Specter is perhaps one of the most ardent supporters of public education and education funding at the federal level.

Senator Specter is currently serving his fifth term, and in 2005, he became Pennsylvania's longest serving U.S. Senator. He is ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a senior member of the Appropriations and Veterans Affairs committees. Under his leadership, funding for education has increased more than 130%.

Senator Specter supported the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act, however he feels there should be state flexibility in its implementation.

Senator Specter continues to be a force on Capitol Hill and an advocate of public education. He is to be commended for his continued support of children.

He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Joan. They have two sons and four grandchildren.

(Harrisburg, PA)—Approximately 200 elementary, middle level and secondary school principals, assistant principals, supervisors and other education leaders will convene in the Harrisburg area for the 15th annual conference of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association) to be held October 21-23, 2007 at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel & Convention Center in Camp Hill.

"This conference is dedicated to assist principals, assistant principals and other educational leaders with the many initiatives such as AYP, IDEIA, Act 1, NCLB and others they ecounter on a daily basis," explained Marshall J. Wagner, the 2007 conference chairperson and a retired principal from the Hollidaysburg Area School District.

Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) has been selected to receive the PA Principals Association's prestigious Educational Excellence Award for 2007. The honor is given annually to a citizen of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who has made significant contributions to the attainment of education excellence in the state's elementary and secondary schools. Senator Specter has demonstrated a sincere commitment to the quality of public education in the Commonwealth.The award will be presented to the Senator during PA Principals Association's annual banquet (6:00 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, 2007).

(HARRISBURG, PA-June 15, 2007) - Ms. Kathryn (Kate) Taylor, principal of Grandview Elementary School in Morrisville, Pa., was selected as Pennsylvania's 2007 National Distinguished Principal. The 2007 celebration marks the 24th year the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the U.S. Department of Education have presented this prestigious award.

"Ms. Taylor was nominated and selected by her fellow principals through a statewide search process conducted by the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association)," said PA Principals Association president Dr. Barbara Rudiak.

A graduate of Rowan College, Ms. Taylor previously held the position of classroom teacher in both the Philadelphia Parochial School System and Baltimore County Public School system. She also served as an assistant principal in the Baltimore County public school system and taught as an adjunct professor at Western Maryland College. She has served as a principal of Grandview Elementary School since 2000.

"Research results prove what school communities know from experience - successful schools depend on dedicated instructional leaders," said Vincent L. Ferrandino, NAESP executive director. "This honor represents our deep appreciation to a few of those who are committed to academic, social and emotional development of school children both in the nation and overseas."

Over the last six years, Ms. Taylor has transformed Grandview Elementary School, where low achievement was the norm, into a positive and successful learning community. She focused on creating a safe and respectful school environment. One of her most recent accomplishments was in changing the two K-5 elementary schools into a K-2 school and a 3-5 school. 

Ms. Taylor was nominated for the Baltimore County Teacher of the Year in 1990. In 1997, she was the Performance Learning System's (PLS) National Top Evaluation Scorer and was awarded the Outstanding Instructor Award by the PLS in 1999.

The Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association) is pleased to announce that Dr. William Hartman, Jr. will become PA Principals Association's new Executive Director on July 1, 2007. At the association's December board meeting, Dr. J. Daniel Collins announced his plans to retire on June 30, 2007.

Dr. Hartman is retiring from York Suburban School District at the end of June where he serves as superintendent.

RESTON, VA — Thomas Lesniewski, principal of Deer Lakes Middle School, Russellton, and Janice Mindish, principal of Penn Manor High School, Millersville, were named the 2007 MetLife/NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals) Pennsylvania Middle Level and High School Principals of the Year, respectively.

Jointly sponsored by NASSP and MetLife, the annual State and National Principal of the Year Awards program recognizes outstanding secondary school principals who demonstrate excellence in educational leadership, complex problem solving, professional growth, and community involvement.

Cashman, Sr., immediate past president of the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PA Principals Association) and principal of Susquehannock High School in the Southern York County School District, was honored as the outgoing president by his peers and invited guests at the fourteenth annual State Principals' Conference in Pittsburgh. Mr. Cashman was presented with a plaque and a ring for his exemplary service to the association in 2005-2006 during the annual banquet held at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel on Sunday evening, October 29, 2006.

Mr. Cashman turned the president's gavel over to Dr. Barbara A. Rudiak, PA Principals Association's 2006-2007 president, at the association's annual business meeting on Tuesday, October 31, 2006. Dr. Rudiak is the executive director, school management, K-5 elementary schools for the Pittsburgh School District.

Throughout his professional career, Mr. Cashman served as principal at Columbia Senior High School and as the assistant principal at Cedar Cliff High School. He has been an administrator since 1988.

A member of PA Principals Association and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) for 16 years, he served PA Principals Association as the 2004-05 president-elect and the Central II regional representative to both the PA Principals Association Board of Directors and the former Pennsylvania Association of Secondary School Principals (PASSP) board. He also served as the advisor to PA Principals Association's Secondary Awards Committee, as the PA Principals Association State Conference co-chairperson in 1999 and as a member of the NASSP Student Activities Contest and PIAA District III committees. He assumed the position of NASSP representative to the PA Principals Association Board of Directors following the annual business meeting at the conference. In this position, he will be responsible for membership referrals, appointment of members to NASSP task forces and committees and making state arrangements for the NASSP annual conference.

He earned a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education from Slippery Rock University and a master of science degree in school administration from Western Maryland University.

Mr. Cashman resides in Hanover, Pa., with his wife, Judy, a teacher at Smith Middle School in the York City School District. They have three children and two grandchildren: a son, Chris, who is married to Sandy, and has two children, Chelsea and Alexis; a son, Brian Jr., who is married to Megan; and a daughter, Jennie.

PA Principals Association's Mission: The Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals is dedicated to assuring that every Pennsylvania child receives the very best education possible. In carrying out this mission, the association recognizes that the early elementary years are most crucial to successful lifelong learning, that appropriate middle level programs are essential for successful adolescent maturation and development and that strong high school programs are critical for preparing youth for successful entry and transition into adulthood.

PA Principals Association recognizes an obligation to make continuing contributions toward strengthening the principalship and the profession. The association is committed to providing critical professional growth opportunities through training programs, opportunities for constructive professional mentoring and relationships, publications, conferences and professional meetings and activities aimed at helping aspiring principals in reaching their goals and practicing principals to hone their skills.
