Pursuant to section 1216.1 of the Public School Code, 24 P.S. § 12-1261.1, the Educator Discipline Fee currently added to all applications for certification will be increased to $100 effective November 1, 2016.  The purpose of this fee is to provide for the administration, enforcement, and adjudication of professional discipline by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and the Professional Standards and Practices Commission.  The $100 fee will attach to certifications in addition to the application fee charged by PDE.  A new combined fee, representing the total application fee inclusive of the Educator Discipline Fee, will be effective for all certification applications filed on or after November 1, 2016, as identified on the fee chart found on PDE’s website.

Make no mistake: There is a civil war going on in the black community.
On one side are charter school operators, foundations run by billionaires and school choice movement leaders who support the private control of public schools as envisioned by economist Milton Friedman in the 1950s. On the other side are parents, students and community members who are demanding true equity and democracy in our public schools.

Caroline Pollock Bilicki felt uneasy about the new education program introduced this year at her children’s Chicago school. Summit Basecamp, built with the help of Facebook engineers, was billed as a powerful tool that could reshape how students learn. But it also captures a stream of data, and Bilicki had to sign a consent form for her children to participate, allowing their personal data to be shared with companies such as Facebook and Google.

On September 28, 2016, the Pennsylvania Senate introduced and adopted Senate Resolution 439 (Sen. Pat Vance, R-31), recognizing October 2016 as “National Principals Month” in Pennsylvania.

Join the Pennsylvania Principals Association, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the National Association of Elementary School Principals to celebrate principals in Pennsylvania and across the country during National Principals Month!

National Principals Month is an opportunity to say “thank you” to principals everywhere and to share with the community all the great things that principals do.

As you plan your National Principals Month activities, be sure to check out the national associations’ “Ideas for Celebrating” and the “interactive National Principals Month wall,” where you can read about and post activities happening in schools and communities nationwide.

The 2016 National Distinguished Principals, as named by the National Association of Elementary School Principals, were honored October 7 at an awards banquet in Washington, D.C. Paul M. Healey, Ph.D., PA Principals Association executive director, and Dr. Melissa D. Patschke, NAESP Zone 2 director and PA Principals Association ex-officio board member, were in attendance to celebrate with Pennsylvania NDP, Joseph P. Brereton, principal of Butler Elementary School (Chalfont, Pa.) in the Central Bucks School District. (See photos below.)

Established in 1984, the two-day NDP celebration program, which was held at the Capital Hilton Hotel, recognizes public and private school principals who make superior contributions to their schools and communities. The 58 principal honorees are selected by NAESP state affiliates and by committees representing private and overseas schools.
